Cisco Predicts Mobile Data Explosion
If wireless carriers think their networks are congested now, they would cringe to imagine how much worse Cisco Systems Inc. believes that congestion will get by 2016. On Tuesday, the world’s largest network equipment maker predicted more than 10 billion mobile Internet-connection devices such as tablets and smartphones will be in circulation by 2016, vastly exceeding the number of human beings alive on Earth. “Up to one quarter of all users will have two or more devices so if you have a business-issued laptop or smartphone you may have an additional tablet or eReader,” explained Thomas Barnett, a senior marketing director at Cisco. “That is pretty significant and obviously puts a lot more stress on a mobile network.”
